You don’t have to be a football fanatic to appreciate The Way Back – True Blue 2. By the Swedish movie premiere in the spring of 2002 the film was honoured for its warmth and humour.
The legendary football team Malmö FF has been kicked out of the Swedish Premier League for the first time in 64 years. The camera captures the despair in the faces of the players and leaders afterwards in the locker room. The unemployed supporter Lasse is home in his kitchen, devastated. His girlfriend Maria is trying to console him. From now on, the way back to the Premier League begins. Lasse follows his team at the football grounds all around Sweden. But sometimes he drinks a little too much…
A young guy with an immigrant background gets an important role in the team. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is described as being the greatest talent in Swedish football ever. However, his cocky attitude creates problems in the team. Zlatan has to control his temperament and learn that football is a team sport.
ABOUT THE DIRECTORS
Magnus Gertten:
A former radio and television journalist from the Swedish Radio and Swedish Television. Started Auto Images AB together with Stefan Berg 1998. Inspired by visiting bars on Möllevången, the movie Babel, his hopeless favorite team Malmo FF, dusty old film reels, silk route to China and rattling electric guitars. Knows that it is a privilege to take part of people’s life stories.
Fredrik Gertten:
Malmö journalist Fredrik Gertten has rapidly evolved as an established documentary filmmaker. “It is curiosity that is the subject of my films” says Fredrik Gertten. It is the journalistic curiosity that drives him and makes him stubbornly go ahead and get further and further into the closed rooms where the important decisions are made.
Stefan Berg:
Filmmaker and photographer. Malmö-based filmmaker, he has produced and worked with still images, video clips and commercial film. Born in 1957 in Stockholm. The producer to films like Sjung ingen lovsång – Solisten,Svenstorp Blues, Pojkar, Rolling Like a Stone.
